I arrived in Hong Kong last night after my book tour in crowded New Zealand and busy Australia (19 interviews, 9 talks in 5 cities…and IN 7 DAYS…!!!)…
My body has been ‘’seasoned” by the cold winter in New Zealand, and by Australia’s beautiful spring and Hong Kong’s hot summer, and our minds have been educated and moved by the people’s love of China Witness.
Touring still touches me so deeply – when I walked dead tired into my Hong Kong hotel I was reinvigorated by a copy of TIME OUT lying on the bedside table with many other magazines, inside it was a review of ‘China Witness’ by Edmund Lee.
I was so moved, not only by the thoughtful timing, but also by the understanding of the review which talks of my passion for the real China and my feelings for those Chinese Witnesses who have told me their hidden lives.

hello Xinran,
I am a Malaysian Chinese living in London since 2001. I had never received Chinese education because my parents sent me to an English boarding school since I was seven.
Upon receiving my postgraduate degree in London, I stayed on and am now working in a creative production studio in Hoxton Square. I am an interactive producer as main profession, and at the same time, an art curator, art writer, photographer…. and had my 1st personal project exhibited in London last summer. I am now working on my next personal project…
To cut things short, I have always been interested in Chinese history, culture and people, and read the book, The Good Women of China in 2006 which moves me deeply.
I just bought the book “China Witness” and am particularly interested in one of the chapters, Qin Huai lantern makers. lanterns are one of my favourite objects when I was a child especially Mid-Autumn Festival when my mother would buy me 10-20 paper lanterns to play in the balcony area.
I agree in the book that it is a craft tradition and not to be forgotten. I’d like to help these people to pass on the craft via different routes and one of the things that I am thinking is having these lanterns displayed in different Chinatowns around the world (create public awareness and income revenue for these elderly people as well as to continue the legacy).
I believe you’ll be the best person to talk to as I’d like to find out more about these lantern makers, their work and info about Chinese local authorities. much appreciated if you could respond to this e-mail (it is my office and you’ll find me there) as soon as you read them.
many thanks,
Waiming
Dear Xinran,
Your book ‘The Good Women of China’ is in my hand as I have just written in praise of it on my blog. Happy New Year today, I hope this year will be successful for you, and that your loved ones are healthy and happy.
Thankyou for touching my life.

Dear Xinran, I love your “Sky Burial”!
24 Feb 2010, my husband and I, we tried to attend your speak at Riverbend Books, Bulimba, Brisbane, tickets have been sold out, we can’t get in.
